| Compare Owner Onsite Presence. Discover and Share is family owned and operated and is under the direct daily management of the knowledgeable owners. Large chains have knowledgable early childhood specialists in their head office, but often cannot produce consistent quality at every individual center. It is very difficult to produce elements of quality consistently in a real time classroom on a daily basis. It takes considerable dedication and onsite presence and attention on the part of the staff and administration. Quality can deteriorate quickly without constant follow up and management. It is our contention that a large chain has a difficult time in furnishing quality on a consistent basis mostly because there is a difference in dedication between ownership and employment. |

| Compare Administration Experience, Stability and Maturity. Suzanne Schoenthaler (director) was an elementary school teacher for twenty years and has been working in the early childhood profession for nine years. She has a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education and is a reading specialist. She has a gifted and talented teaching credential and an Early Childhood Administrative Credential. Having lived 60 years, she makes decisions based on her life experience as a mother and professional educator. John Schoenthaler (owner) has a Master’s Degree in Petroleum Engineering and a Early Childhood Administrative Credential. John handles the business and maintenance of the center and takes children on field trips. Both Suzanne and John are hands-on owners and are away from the center no more than a few weeks a year. Stephanie Clark is the front desk administrator. She is conscientious, intelligent, hard working and really cares about the center. She has two children at Discover and Share., so she has a strong commitment to the quality running of this center. Compare Stephanie to our competition’s assistant director. |

| Compare Curriculum. Discover & Share tailors its curricula to what research says works for children. Discover & Share emphasizes ‘developmentally appropriate practice’, a term used by educators to denote children learning by doing, touching, using, playing and having success at an individualized pace. This term was coined by researchers to distinguish effective early childhood education from ‘traditional practice’ which emphasized overly structured group learning where an active teacher teaches to passive students who memorize the same subject matter regardless of interest or developmental level.. Standardized tests given to elementary school children show that those educated in a developmentally appropriate environment score equally in math and higher in reading, language and problem solving and were more enthusiastic about learning than those educated in traditional programs. The curriculum is both academic and play based. The children play in learning centers (The main centers are art, music, writing, books, blocks, home living, science, manipulative – math, problem solving, fine motor skills– , computer, and sensory table.). Each week the children experience a different theme using books, songs, and art and other experiences based on the theme. One or two centers may directly relate to the theme, such as the block center would be used to build cars, trucks, trains, airplanes, for the transportation themes. The science center changes with the season and themes. Toys and learning materials in the centers are changed throughout the year. All ages experience a print rich environment. Group time emphasizes common learning experiences similar to traditional practice. Outside the children experience sand in the sand boxes and in the warmer weather water tables. Many centers do not have sand boxes due to the expense (Yes, clean sand costs money!) and to the mess sand causes, but we think sand offers children wonderful tactile experiences and should be available to them. The playgrounds are very large, so children can run and play organized games easily. The school age children have an area where they can play soccer, tag football, softball.. Teachers do not have to schedule outside playground time since the playgrounds are large enough to accomodate the whole school at once. Many centers have to schedule outside play. On rainy and/or cold days, the teachers plan activities so the children can experience gross motor activities, such as dancing, creative movement, playing musical chairs, riding outside toys inside, bouncing balloons in the air, taking walks around the center. Kindergarten teachers have told us that our graduates are very well prepared for public schools. |

| Compare Playgounds The center's four playgrounds are large and offer a variety of ground cover and equipment. The playgrounds are so large that teachers do not have to schedule playground time to accommodate other classrooms. Children go out when it suits the curriculum and the weather. A state law requires 80 square feet of playground space per child. Most schools must schedule their outside time. |

| Compare Enrichment Activities The center offers lots of enrichment activities. Children may take dance and computers. Mister David performs at the Center twice a month. A theater arts groups performs a multi-cultural play for three years and above each month except in February. Discover & Share has a school bus which allows many field trips, especially with the older preschoolers and school-agers, including The Dallas Children Theatre, Le Marionette Theatre, the science museums, and so on. The school age children go on field trips every day they are off school . |
